Girls' day and other thoughts

I started writing a story about a guy at a science centre and began to reminisce about my formative times at the Ontario Science Centre once upon a time as an undergrad.

At the Ontario Science Centre. Guy in lab coat in front of metal control panel with two tubes stretching out, glowing pink. I played with a bi,g throbbing pink carbon dioxide laser. Close up salt len which looks like a metal nut. It generated an infrared beam that we focussed with a lense made of salt. Wall of fire brks with melted sections. I thought it was cool that CO2 could melt fire bricks. A polar bear on a small patch of sea ice. Before I found out it could melt ice caps.

Walking the dog forces me to get outside, which is good. Sometimes the outside is like the inside.

Birds of a feather. Panel 1. A male mallard duck next to a crow. With my birding skills, I can distinguish a duck from a crow. Panel 2. Two mallard ducks. Lately, I’ve seen ducks in our area, which is unusual. Panel 3. Male and female mallards feeding on grass. They seem lost and missing their flock. Panel 4. Guy with glasses looking forlorn. but perhaps I’m just anthropomorphizing.

I had this feeling I had come up with a good idea. When you’re doing a daily comic, even not having an idea can be an idea. I notice I mis-dated it T for Tuesday instead of W for Wednesday. That’s how out of it am from staying up late dealing with my daughter’s hysteria over chemistry problems.

One that got away. Panel 1. Empty brass glasses holder on top a of a dress. When something is not in its place. Panel 2. Finding mask in track bottoms in laundry. I retrace my steps and sometimes I can find it. Panel 3. Middle-aged guy with glasses thinking. But today, I could not figure out what I did with. Panel 4. horizontal line. The idea for this cartoon.

I may have picked up the habit from my Dad. But I only play once a day, whether or not it works out.

Evening relaxation. Panel 1. Holding a deck of cards and an ace of hearts. To wind down, I play solitair with real cards. Panel 2. Hands riffle shuffle cards. I like their sound and feel. Panel 3. Guy sitting on floor with cards arranged in front of him. It gets me away from screens. Panel 4. Hand with Jack of spades. and it’s easier to cheat. Yay, I’m up.

I’m not sure where the apostrophe goes on Girls’ Day or even if one is necessary. It is on the third day of the third month, but has not been a significant part of my experience. It is also eighty years since Japanese Canadians got kicked out of the coast of British Columbia for looking like the enemy.

Hinamatsuri. Panel 1. Scarlet tiered arrangement of ornate Japanese dolls. My mom had a fancy doll set as a girl. Panel 2. Leather suitcase being carried. before she had to “evacuate” during the War. Panel 3. Ceramic doll head. My daughter said dolls were creepy. Panel 4. Foot kicking a martial arts dummy. she prefers dummies she can beat up.
