Coyote and the Enemy Aliens
My daughter received an anthology of short stories by Indigenous writers called Our Story. One title jumped out at me, by Thomas King, who I’d heard speak on the radio but not read. His story, “Coyote and the Enemy Aliens,” is an odd, almost poetic tale of the narrator who meets Coyote the trickster who has gotten as job for the white men in 1942 as a Custodian of Enemy Alien Property. His job was to sell off various goods that the government has acquired. Toward the end, Coyote is beginning to confuse the Enemy Aliens with the natives. Interesting.
