The protagonist, a male Nisei painter, goes on a road trip to BC from Ottawa with his dog, after his wife passes away. These chapters alternate memories of growing up on a self-supporting camp during WWII on the Fraser. I suppose it ends hopefully enough, but mostly it is depressing, with his wife dying and his difficult childhood. This is an earnest introduction to Japanese Canadians during WWII by a Caucasian writer married to a Nisei man. I am struggling with writing about this difficult time because I imagine people like me scrutinizing the plausibility of every scene and utterance.
